Thomas Schaaf was born on April 30, 1961 in Mannheim, West Germany.
Thomas Schaaf can be righteously called a unique footballer as he devoted 40 years of his life to a single football club – Werder Bremen. His football path began with the youth team in 1972, continued in the Werder Bremen main squad in 1978 and eventually resulted in coaching career commenced in 1995. Thomas (played as a defender) made 281 appearances in Bundesliga and scored 14 goals.
When a player, Thomas Schaaf helped Werder Bremen to two German championship titles (1988, 1993) and the German cups (1991, 1994), three German Supercups (1988, 1993 and 1994) as well as the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup (1992). When a coach, he led the team to victories in the German championship in 2004, the German cup in 1999, 2004 and 2009 and to the UEFA Cup Final in 2009. In 2004, Thomas was awarded Coach of the Year in Germany.
His era at the club ended in May 2013 when he was released from the club after 14 years at the helm.
In 2014 Schaaf was offered a job at Eintracht Frankfurt.
