Valery Karpin is a former professional midfielder and former coach of FC Spartak Moscow. He was born on 2 February 1969 in Narva, Estonia.
Valery started out his football career at Sport Tallinn in 1986. In between 1988 and 1994, he played for such Russian teams as CSKA Moscow, Fakel Voronezh and Spartak Moscow, the latter one being the most successful stint. During a four-year spell at Spartak since 1990 to 1994, Karpin scored 29 goals in 116 games. He won the Russian Top Division thrice in a row from 1992 to 1994 and recorded the Rusian Cup in 1992. Since 1994 to 2005, Karpin played in Spain for such prominent clubs as Real Sociedad, Valencia and Celta Vigo before the retirement in 2005. In between 1992 and 2003, the midfielder was a regular international for the Russia national team amassing 17 goals in 72 matches for his side.
In 2008, Valery Karpin embarked on his managerial career when he was appointed a chief executive at Spartak Moscow. In a year he became the team’s head coach and had several spells in charge.
