Vanderlei Luxemburgo is a Brazilian professional coach and former footballer. He was born on 10 May 1952 in Nova Iguaçu, Brazil.
Vanderlei spent his playing career at Flamengo, Internacional and Botafogo. He took up coaching in 1983 when he was hired at Campo Grande Atlético Clube. Since then Luxemburgo put a stamp on a myriad different clubs and earned a great number of trophies. He won the Brazilian Série A five times: with Palmeiras in 1993 and 1994, with Corinthians in 1998, with Cruzeiro in 2003, being their second victory since 1966, and with Santos in 2004. Luxemburgo led Bragantino to the Brazilian Série B win thus promoting the club to the top division. In 2003, he recorded the Brazilian Cup with Cruzeiro and has 13 Brazilian state championships victories in his tally.
Luxemburgo was at the helm of the Brazil national team in between 1998 and 2000. It was to his immense credit that the team won the Copa America in 1999. It is worth mentioning that the Brazilian coach ruled the roost at the Spanish giants Real Madrid in the 2004/05 season. In February 2012, Vanderlei Luxemburgo took over the reins at Grêmio.
