Walter Mazzarri is a retired Italian football player, currently the manager of Internazionale. He started playing football in Fiorentina’s youth team, though made his debute at the professional level in Pescara in 1981. After a short spell in Seria A club Cagliai he moved to Reggiana for a season, later signing a five-year deal with Empoli. From 1988 till 1995 Mazarri played for such teams as Licata, Modena, Viareggio, Acireale and Sassari Torres where retired from playing.
Mazzari started coaching in 1998 in Napoli as a manager’s assistant. After heading Serie C2 team Acireale and Serie C1 side Pistoiese, he was appointed as a boss of Serie B side Livorno, earning the team promotion to the top tier of Italian football. Under his helm Reggina secured a place in Serie A for three seasons.
Mazzari’s time in Sampdoria brought him fame and recognition, as the manager helped the side to finish 6th after 2007/2008 campaign and climbed to the final of the Coppa Italia where Sampdoria was beaten by Lazio on penalties.
Napoli appointed Mazzari as a head coach in 2009. He improved the club’s results dramatically, leading the side to the third place on the table in 2011 and reaching last-16 of the Champions League. In 2013 Napoli finished second in Serie A and Walter Mazzarri was invited to Internazionale.
