Bahrain got a first taste of international action in a tough 4-4 draw against Kuwait in 1966. The same year it suffered its biggest 1-10 defeat to Iraq.
Bahrain has never reached FIFA World Cup finals though it was twice very close to such a breakthrough. Instead, the squad had four appearances in the AFC Asian Cup making a debut in 1988. The team pulled off in a decent fourth place in the 2004 Asian Cup being defeated 3-4 by Japan in semi-final and losing the third-place match to Iran.
Bahrain has also made its mark in the Arab Nations Cup. It shone in the group stage for two times and finished twice as runner-up, in 1985 and 2002.
Most recently, in February 2012, the team established its biggest ever win over Indonesia, thrashing the opponent 10-0. It currently has the 112th rank in the FIFA table.
