The squad was known as the Dahomey national football team up to 1975 when the country was officially renamed for Benin. It’s nicknamed The Squirrels.
Up to the late 1990s Benin hadn’t shown good results. But at the beginning of the 20th century it has improved its performance participating in three Africa Cup of Nations finals (2004, 2008, and 2010). After the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations in Angola, the Federation Beninoise de Football, that controls the national team, have dissolved it, coach Henri Dussuyer and his complete staff were fired.
Today Manuel Amoros is the team’s Head Coach and Stephane Sessegnon is the captain.
