On the international scene Bermuda is represented by the Bermuda national football team. A mediocre member of CONCACAF, the squad has to compete with such giants of the confederation as the USA and Mexico in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The team got a first taste to World Cup qualifiers in 1970, though they were not very fortunate then.
The squad entered twice the CONCACAF Championship in 1969 and 1971, and the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2005 and 2009. In all cases it was too poor to qualify. However, they were at the peak of the success when they finished fourth in the Island Games in 2007. The team passed flying colors with their splendid 13-0 win over Montserrat in February 2004.
It’s quite surprising but the Bermuda has its own championship which is a good showing for such a dwarf country. That is not to say that the Bermudians are not serious about their football. On the contrary, football is a beloved sport in Bermuda and the Football Association contributes much to its development though at slow rates. Perhaps, though hilarious as it could be, one of the reasons for poor results in international competitions is that Bermuda is too sporty a country to be concentrated only on football. Sometimes many players fume about athletics, squash and even cricket not devoting enough time to their training.
