The Botswana national team falls under control of the Botswana Football Association established in 1970. It affiliated to CAF in 1976 and to FIFA in 1978.
The Zebras, as they are nicknamed in Africa, got off on the wrong foot in their debut game against Malawi in 1968 as they lost 1-8. That was the biggest defeat within their record. Their greatest win came in 2002 when they beat Swaziland 6-2.
It’s hardly possible to see Botswana in major international competitions. The team has qualified neither for FIFA World Cup finals nor for the Africa Cup of Nations. However, its rough patch ended as the squad made its major progress reaching the African Cup’s Round 1 in 2012. Stanley Tshosane, who rules the roost of the Botswana national team, seems to be quite optimistic about African football. Nevertheless, his brightside doesn’t put on dash and vigour to his men’ playing.
In the FIFA top list, Botswana holds the 123d position, reaching their highest ever ranking of 53d in December 2010.
