Burundi is one of the five poorest countries in the world but nevertheless it has its own football federation – the Fédération de Football du Burundi, which controls the Burundi national team. It was founded in 1948 but affiliated to CAF and FIFA only in 1972.
A football dwarf, Burundi has never got enough power and playing abilities to break into the FIFA World Cup finals. Since 1930 till 1990, the team didn’t even enter the tournament, having a first go to the FIFA World Cup qualifying in 1994 where it fell flat on its face. Regarding the Africa Cup of Nations, Burundi has never managed to pass through the qualifying.
In June 1976, the team celebrated their biggest ever 6-2 win over Rwanda, however, the same year they suffered their greatest defeat. The offender was the Cameroon national team which netted five one-way goals against Burundi. In June 2003, Côte d’Ivoire repeated Cameroon’s success, the only difference being 6-1 defeat to Burundi.
In the FIFA rankings Burundi is placed in the second hundred. To be more exact, it is ranked 134th as of September 2012.
