History and achievements

The Costa Rica national football team is governed by the Federacion Costarricense de Futbol and CONCACAF. According to CONCACAF the Costa Rica national football team is one of the top three teams in Central and South America. That was proved when the team won seven out of ten CONCACAF championships in the period from 1941 till 1961. After North American Football Confederation joined CONCACAF Costa Rica became the champion three times (1963, 1969 and 1989).

The team successfully qualified for the World Cup championships in 2002 and 2006 where reached 1/8 finals. However, in 2006 the team finished fourth in its group, and established a reputation of an obstinate team. In 2009 CONCACAF qualification Costa Rica lost to Uruguay and in 2010 it didn’t qualify for the World Cup held in South Africa.

The team participated in the Copa America three times where once it failed to leave the group stage and twice played in the quarterfinals.
