The Cuba national team represents the country in association football. It is overseen by the Asociación de Fútbol de Cuba founded in 1924. The team affiliated to FIFA in 1932 and became a CONCACAF member in 1961.
Cuba got off to a flying start beating Jamaica 3-1 in their first international match in 1930. The team is often nicknamed the Lions of the Caribbean, and the name proved its worth as Cuba made a barn burner becoming the first Caribbean team to qualify for the World Cup. They accomplished the feat in France 1938 edition reaching the quarter-finals and finishing fourth. However, the Cuban men have never repeated the success since then.
Besides the FIFA World championship, Cuba participated in the CONCACAF Championship finishing fourth in the 1971 and the fifth in 1981.
The Cuban team celebrated their biggest ever 9-0 win over Puerto Rico in May 1995. They suffered their biggest 0-8 defeats to Sweden and the Soviet Union.
Cuba is currently ranked 147th in the FIFA world list (September 2012) climbing to its highest position of 46th in November 2006.
