The DR Congo national football team is the national team of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The team is nicknamed the Leopards. The Fédération Congolaise de Football-Association was founded in 1919, at that time the country was a Belgium colony. From 1971 to May 1997 it was named the Zaire national football team.
Belgian Congo made its debut in 1948 against Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia. The match ended 3–2 victory. Congo became a member of FIFA in 1962 and a member of the Confederation of African Football in 1963.
Zaire won the 1968 and 1974 CAF Africa Cup of Nations and as DR Congo national team they finished third in the1998 Africa cup of Nations but they couldn’t manage to qualify for the last three editions.
Having won the 1974 Africa Cup of Nations they became the first ‘black’ African team to qualify for the FIFA World Cup. That was their only appearance at the major tournament.
