The Gabon national football team has never qualified for the World Cup championships, nevertheless the team managed to play in the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations for five times. In their first 1994 Africa Cup of Nations they lost to Egypt 0-7 in their group but later in 1996 Gabon reached the quarterfinal and that was the team’s best ever result. In the year of 2000 the team, nicknamed The Panthers, showed poor result and came out on the bottom of their group.
In the 2010 African Cup of Nations the team was close to succeed as well as in 1996, being equal in the number of scores, but finally they finished third in its group conceding the qualification on goal difference.
During the qualifying campaign for the 2010 World Cup Gabon was the leader after three rounds, the team could beat Cameroon, a powerful opponent, but then failed to succeed and eventually it was Cameroon that qualified for the championship.
In 2012 Gabon and Equatorial Guinea were the co-host countries of the Africa Cup of Nations so they didn’t need to qualify for the championship, where Gabon reached the quarterfinals.
The team won some local tournaments in Central Africa such as the UNIFAC Cup in 1999 and the UDEAC Championship in 1985 and 1988.
