The Gambia national team is the football squad which represents Gambia on the international scene. It is controlled by the Gambia Football Association founded in 1952.
The team made its debut as British Gambia in a fine 3-2 win over Senegal in December 1962. It got a first taste to a serious competition in the 1976 Summer Olympics qualification campaign in Canada in April 1975. However, Gambia was thrashed 0-7 on aggregate by Guinea and eliminated from the championship.
In January 1977, the team had a bash at competing with European side. It was a 1-4 loss to Denmark.
Despite their threatening nickname the Scorpions, the squad is one of the weakest sides of the African football. It has qualified neither for the FIFA World Cup nor for the Africa Cup of Nations. It only succeeded in a minor championship for Western African nations Amílcar Cabral Cup where Gambia became a runner-up thrice.
As of September 2012, Gambia had the 129th position in the FIFA World ranking.
