The Georgia national football team played its first game in 1990 when Georgia still remained part of the USSR. This friendly match against Lithuania finished in a draw 2-2.
In 1991 Georgia became independent and played the first friendly game against Moldova. In 1992 the Georgian Football Federation became a member of FIFA and UEFA.
During the Euro 1996 qualifying campaign they defeated Moldova in 1994, 1-0, and finished third in its group as well as in the 2002 World Cup qualifying campaign. That was Georgia’s best ever performance.
