History and achievements
The Greece national football team is controlled by the Hellenic Football Federation.
Euro 1980 was the first serious championship for the team, as Greece managed to reach the final tournament. The benchmark for the Greece football team is the year of 2004 when they celebrated an unbelievable success claiming the title of European Champions. Greece managed to pass the group stage and successively eliminated France, the Czech Republic and hosts Portugal. Bookmakers had 80 to 1 bets for Greece prior to the tournament, so their victory came out of the blue. The team’s head coach Otto Rehhagel became a national hero but suffered much criticism for extremely defensive performance.
A period of recession followed after success and Greece didn’t manage to play in the World Cup in 2006.
In 2010 Greece took part in the World Cup in South Africa after beating Ukraine in qualifying games. Unfortunately the team didn’t manage to make it past the group stage.
At 2012 European Cup Greece made it to the quarterfinals to be beaten by Germany.
Theodoros Zagorakis played the largest number of games (120) and Nicos Anastopulos is the team’s top scorer (29). Today Fernando Santos it the Head Coach and Giorgos Karagounis is the captain.
