The Guyana national team represents Guyana on the international football scene. The team has a long and complicated history as its emergence dates back to 1902 when the Guyana Football Federation, which takes control under the team, was created. In its early years, until 1966, the squad performed as the British Guiana national team. It played its first match as a British colony on 28 January 1921 against Surinam. The debut as an independent country came in the 1971 CONCACAF Championship against the same Surinam.
The Golden Jaguars, as the team is nicknamed among fans, has never broke into the FIFA World Cup finals, though they were a footstep away from it during the 1978 FIFA World Cup qualifying. They reached the third round of qualifying then but were beaten by giants Mexico 1-3 and eliminated shortly after that. The team met their major success when they finished fourth in the 1991 Caribbean Cup.
Guyana got its biggest 14-0 victory in a match against Anguilla in April 1998. Its biggest thrash was a 0-9 loss to Mexico.
The team currently has the 122d position in FIFA ranking, reaching 86th at the utmost.
