The Honduras national football team made its debut in 1921 in the game with Guatemala and suffered a humiliating defeat 1-10. It took long time to achieve success defeating Nicaragua, 13-0, in 1946. Only several decades later football was paid interest in the country.
In 1980s the team achieved a certain progress. The country was chosen to host the CONCACAF Championship and succeeded in winning it. That was the team’s first win that promoted the team to qualify for the World Cup in 1982 where it scored draws against host Spain, 1-1, and Northern Ireland, 1-1, but lost to Yugoslavia, 0-1.
In the 1985 and 1991 CONCACAF Championships Honduras finished as runner-up.
In 2001 CONMEBOL invited the team to participate in Copa America in Colombia where Honduras finished third. The World Soccer says that the Honduran national football team is one of the most fast-developing team in the world.
Honduras finished in the Round 4 in the 2009 CONCACAF Championship and played in the group stage in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
