History and achievements
The Iceland national football team has never made an appearance in the World Cup championship.
In Euro 2004 qualifying campaign the team showed their best ever performance. However, they lost 0-3 to Germany and couldn’t reach play-off.
An interesting tidbit about the team is that Eidur Smari Gudjohnsen played with his father Arnor in one and the same friendly game with Estonia in 1996.
One more notable event took place in 2004 when Iceland beat Italy 2-0 in a friendly game in Reykjavik. 20,000 fans, out of the country’s total 290 thousand inhabitants, attended the match held on the home Laugardalsvollur stadium.
In qualification campaign to the World Cup 2014 Iceland managed to finish second in their group and made it to play-off round. However, the team failed to beat experienced Croatia to reach a historic final tournament in Brazil.
