The team of the Dutch East Indies played their first match in 1921 against Singapore, and that was before the country gained independence. In 1934 Java, which represented the Dutch East Indies, was second in the Far Eastern Games.
The Indonesia national football team was the first team in Asia to compete in the 1938 FIFA World Cup. The team made one appearance in the Olympic Games, which was in 1956.
After the 1958 World Cup and till 1970 the team was banned due to the political problems and hadn’t participated in the World Cup tournament. In 1958 they competed in Asian Games and finished third.
During 1960s the team claimed victories the Merdeka Tournament in 1961, 1962 and 1969. In 1968 they won the King’s Cup tournament held in Bangkok. Since 1974 the team renewed their attempts to qualify for the World Cup. In 1987 and 1991 Indonesia was the winner of Asian Games and in 1996 the team made their debut in AFC Asian Cup.
In the new millennium Indonesia was runner-up of ASEAN Football Championship in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2010.
