The national football team of Iran was founded in 1920 and is controlled by the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran. It became the member of FIFA in 25 years. The team is nicknamed ‘Team Melli’. Azadi Stadium is the team’s home stadium.
Carlos Queiroz heads the team at the moment and the top football players are Ali Daei, Mehdi Mahdavikia, Ali Karimi. Ali Daei played 149 games for the team and remains the best scorer. Iran made its first appearance in 1978 World Cup where obtained the 14th place. The next World Cup for the team was in 1998 with Iran finishing 20th. The team played in Round 1 in the Olympic Games in 1964 and 1972 and made it possible to reach the quarterfinal in 1976.
Winning the Asian Cup for three times in a row since 1968 till 1976 is the team’s outstanding achievement. Iran finished 3rd in 1980, 1988, 1992 and 2000 and obtained the 4th place in 1984.
Carlos Queiroz guided the team to the World Cup 2014 in Brazil.
