The Korea Republic national football team is the most eminent Asian team which boasts the biggest number of appearances in the World Cup championship and the only Asian team that reached the World Cup semifinals.
In their first World Cup tournament the team didn’t manage to leave the group, being beaten by a strong team of that time, Hungary, 0-9.
In 1958 a member of the Korean Football Association lost all necessary documents before the championship and that prevented the team from the participation in the World Cup tournament.
After a long cessation the Korea Republic qualified for the 1990 World Cup but failed to reach the play-off. In 1994 and 1998 the team didn’t manage to play in the finals and in 2002 the squad could break through its group and finished fourth, losing to Germany 0-1. That was an incredible success.
The Korea Republic became first in its group in the 2006 World Cup, being headed by Dick Advocaat, but couldn’t succeed in the play-off games. The 2010 World Cup wasn’t lucky for the team as it failed to leave the group.
During the qualifying campaign for the 2014 World Cup the Korea Republic topped the group and will play in the World Cup finals in Brazil.
