The football federation of Laos was founded in 1951. The Laos national football team made its international debut in 1961 in a 0-7 loss at South Vietnam. For a long period of time Laos stayed aside from the Southeast Asian Games and the Tiger Cup because of the political reasons. In 1995 the country competed in the Southeast Asian Games and started to appear at the ASEAN Football Championship. Laos has never qualified for World Cup and Asian Cup.
The team plays home matches at New Laos National Stadium, which was built for Southeast Asian Games in 2009. The stadium has a capacity of 25,000.
