The Liberia national team is the football team representing Liberia on the international arena. It is controlled by the Liberia Football Association founded in 1936.
In 1996 and 2002 campaigns, the team was successful enough to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, though it eliminated after Round 1 in both cases. At the same time, the squad has never had competitive strength and fighting spirit to qualify for the FIFA World Cup. But there is a tidbit, that Liberia was a feeder country of George Weah who became the 1995 FIFA World Player of the Year. He is a former Liberian footballer who became a cult hero of the country as he not only ruled the roost of the national team but also funded it with his own money.
Liberia celebrated their major success after beating Gambia 4-0 in June 1996 and Mauritius 4-0 in September 2000. They suffered their biggest 0-7 defeat to Tunisia in 2001.
The Liberia national team currently has the 111th position in FIFA ranking.
