History and achievements

The Luxembourg national team has a very long history. It is controlled by the Luxembourg Football Federation which was founded in 1908. The team joined FIFA in 1910 and made its international debut in a friendly encounter against France which Luxembourg lost 1-4. Their first win was 5-4 revenge to the same France.

Luxembourg gained UEFA membership in 1954, and in 1964 the dwarf country made its biggest breakthrough in the European championship as they sank the Netherlands in the UEFA Euro 1964 round of 16. However, they didn’t pass through the semi-finals then.

As for the World Cup record, the team was never crowned with much success. It failed to enter the FIFA World Cup in 1930 and was too weak to qualify from 1934 till 2010. It is now ranked 106th in the FIFA table, being 93d at the utmost.

The most prominent figures of the Luxembourg national team are Jeff Strasser and Léon Mart. Jeff Strasser was a big asset for the team with his 98 appearances between 1993 and 2010, and Léon Mart graced the squad with his scoring 16 goals in 24 games from 1933 till 1946.
