The Malaysian national football team is the national team of Malaysia. It has a nickname Harimau Malaya, which means the Malayan Tiger. Until the year of 1963 the team was named the Malaya national football team. Today the control over the team is taken by the Football Association of Malaysia.
The team has never qualified for the World Cup and hasn’t achieved any significant results though in 2010 they won their first ever 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup defeating Indonesia 4-2 on aggregate. Malaysian team succeeded to take the 5th and the 6th position in AFC Asian Cup the in 1976 and 1980 respectively. They did not qualified for this tournament until 2007, when they finished 16th.
The team’s best players are Mokhtar Dahari, who is the top scorer (125 goals) and Soh Chin Aun, who is their most capped footballer (252 appearances).
In 1964, Malaysia beat the Philippines 11-0 and that’s their biggest ever win. Their biggest defeat occurred in 1967, it was a 2-8 loss to New Zealand.
