The Mauritania national team came into existence in 1961. It is controlled by the Fédération de Foot-Ball de la Républic Islamique de Mauritanie which affiliated to FIFA in 1964 and is a member of the Confederation of African Football since 1968.
The Mourabitounes, as the team are nicknamed among their fans, played their first international match against Malagasy Republic in December 1961. They have never qualified for the FIFA World Cup or Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. However, Mauritania recorded two fourth-place finishes in the Amilcar Cabral Cup in 1980 and 1983 and climbed up to the second place of the tournament in 1995 as a host country.
The team suffered their biggest ever defeat in 1972 when they lost 0-14 to Guinea. They celebrated their best goalscoring victory in December 2006 beating Somalia 8-2. As of January 2013, Mauritania is ranked 206th in the FIFA list. The country reached the 85th at the utmost in December 1995.
