The Mauritius national football teams made its international debut in a 2-1 win against Reunion in 1947 and since then for twenty years they competed against only two neighboring teams Reunion and Madagascar. Between the years of 1947 and 1963 Mauritius competed in the Indian Ocean Games Triangulaire and won that tournament on ten occasions.
Mauritius has never qualified for the major tournament, the World Cup, and only once, in 1974, they qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations, but eliminated in Round 1. In 1985 the team was the winner of Indian Ocean Games. In 2004 they managed to reach the quarterfinals of COSAFA Cup.
