The Myanmar national football team was named the Burma national football team till 1989. The team played their first international match in 1951 against Iran and three years later, in 1954, they finished third in Asian Games. In 1966 Burma won their first Asian Games title and did the same in 1970. In 1968 they were runners-up at Asian Cup and in 1972 they competed in the Olympic Games. Between 1965 and 1973 Burma won five consecutive Southeast Asian Games. But in 1970s the team came onto decline due to the situation in the country.
In 2004 Myanmar was fourth at ASEAN Football Championship; in 2007 they won Merdeka Tournament, where they were runners-up in 2007.
The team play their home matches at Thuwunna Stadium which is of 50,000 spectators.
