The Nicaragua national team represents Nicaragua in the association football. It is controlled by the Nicaraguan Football Federation which was founded in 1931. The team became a FIFA member in 1950 and joined CONCACAF in 1968.
A mediocre team of Central America, Nicaragua has never challenged for the top line in the major tournaments. It has never passed through the World Cup qualification campaigns and has quite meager results in CONCACAF Championships and Gold Cup. The Nicaraguan team finished 6th in the 1967 CONCACAF Championship and it proves to be its biggest breakthrough since then onwards.
The team is an easy rival for the other countries of Central America and of course it is a minnow for giant national teams such as Brazil, for example, which easily sank Nicaragua 14-0 in October 1975 establishing the biggest ever defeat of the squad to date. Most recently, in February 2012, the Nicaraguan men celebrated their greatest high-scoring 4-1 win over Puerto Rico.
The team currently (as of September 2012) holds 144th position in the FIFA ranking, reaching the 132d at the utmost.
