The Niger national team is the football team representing Niger on the international arena. It is controlled by the Fédération Nigerienne de Football which affiliated to CAF and FIFA in 1967.
The team’s nickname is the Menas which stands for the dama gazelle, Nigerien national symbol.
A mediocre side of West Africa, Niger has never passed through qualification for the World Cup. It didn’t shine in the Africa Cup of Nations either until 2012, when it unexpectedly beat a strong Egypt 1-0 and broke into the group stage of the championship.
The Menas got their biggest 7-1 win in a continental qualifiers against Mauritania in October 1990. Their biggest 1-9 loss was to Ghana in 1969.
One of the weakest teams in West Africa, Niger’s squad was highest ever ranked 68th in the FIFA list. As of 2012, it has 126th position in the table.
