The Nigeria national football team is governed by the Nigeria Football Federation and represents the Federal Republic of Nigeria in international football. Today the team is ranked 58th in the FIFA World Rankings.
The team has participated in the Africa Cup of Nations since 1957 and became the winner in 1980 and in 1994.
The Nigeria national football team made its debut in the World Cups in 1994 and created a commotion, having reached 1/8 final. In 1998 Nigeria failed to show the same result and was beaten by Denmark 1-4.
Between those two tournaments the team gained gold in 1996 Olympic Games, leaving the national teams of Brazil and Argentina behind.
In June 2010 the team was suspended from international football for two years by Goodluck Jonathan, the President of Nigeria, who withdrew his own ban in July. In October 2010 FIFA imposed the sanction of suspension which banned Nigeria from international competition and the reason for that was interference of the government.
