History and achievements
The Republic of Ireland national football team represents the Republic of Ireland and the name ‘the Ireland national football team’ is no longer used as it would refer to the whole island while there is another state, the Northern Ireland. The team is controlled by the Football Association of Ireland.
Aviva stadium, the home one for the Irish team, was opened in May, 2010. Today the Republic of Ireland is on the 26th position in the FIFA World Ranking. The most capped players are Shay Given (125), Robbie Keane (120), and Kevin Kilbane (110). Robbie Keane is the record goal scorer (53).
When playing, the team prefers the scheme 4-4-2. It is strong in side attacks and power play and footballers are insistent and ready to make a stout resistance when playing despite certain lack of technical skills.
Under the guidance of Giovanni Trapattoni the team qualified for Euro 2012 but failed to make it out of the group losing to Croatia, Italy and Spain.
