In association football Rwanda is represented by the Rwanda national team. It is controlled by The Fédération Rwandaise de Football Association which was founded in 1972. Due to their blue and yellow uniforms, the Rwandan players are nicknamed The Wasps.
The team belongs to the Confederation of African Football which it entered in 1976 as well as became a FIFA member. Still, it has never reached the World Cup finals and had one-and-only appearance in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2004. Rwanda met success only in the CECAFA Cup winning the tournament in 1998 and finishing a runner-up five times.
A minnow in African and world football, Rwanda is constantly overmatched by other African teams. It suffered its biggest defeats to Cameroon, Zaire, Uganda and Tunisia. The country’s biggest breakthrough was a splendid 9-0 win over Djibouti in 2007.
The Rwanda national team is proud of its top scorer Olivier Karekezi who netted 24 goals for the team. The team is currently ranked 120th in FIFA World statistics.
