Not all of us even heard of such a minute island country in the Gulf of Guinea as São Tomé and Príncipe. But nevertheless, the country has its own football federation – the Federação Santomense de Futebol which takes control over the São Tomé and Príncipe national team. The team is a full CAF member since 1976 and joined FIFA in 1986.
The team made its international debut in a 0-5 loss to Chad in June 1976. The following game was a disastrous 0-11 thrash to Congo in July 1976 which turned to be their biggest defeat to date.
The squad celebrated their first 2-0 win over Equatorial Guinea in 1999. Being on a high horse, the Falcons and True Parrots team beat Sierra Leone 2-0 the next game. These two victories are recorded as the biggest high-scoring wins to date.
A minnow in African and world football, São Tomé and Príncipe can’t boast of any significant achievement in the FIFA or Africa Cup of Nations competitions. It was never to get a taste of the finals of these major tournaments, moreover, it always eliminated after the first round of qualifying for them.
The São Tomé and Príncipe national team is ranked 133d in the FIFA table as of September 2012.
