The Saudi Arabia national team represents Saudi Arabia at the international football championships and competitions. It is superintended by the Saudi Arabia Football Federation established in 1956. The same year, the national team affiliated to FIFA and Asian Football Confederation.
The team bears the nickname Al-Saqour (the Green Falcons) among its Asian fans. The name is linked with their uniform which is white and green. The most remarkable Saudi Arabian teams are Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad and Al Shabab. They are the principal feeder clubs of the most crafty and talented footballers in the country.
One of the major powers in Asia, the Saudi Arabia national team has won the AFC Asian Cup trophy three times, in 1984, 1988, and 1996, having made a total of 12 appearances in the competition. It bore the palm in the 1998 and 2002 Arab Nations Cup and was a runner-up in the 1992 FIFA Confederations Cup.
It’s noteworthy that the team reached the FIFA World Cup finals for four times. It was in 1994 when the squad celebrated their major success in the world-class competition as they reached the round of 16. However, they failed to qualify in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
