Amateur Football Association in Singapore was founded in 1892 and since 1921, when the HMS Malaya Cup was formed in Malaya under the British rule, the Singapore national football team competed in it. Throughout its history Singapore won 24 editions of Malaysia Cup tournaments and twice they won Malaysian League titles. In 1996 the professional league in Singapore was formed.
In the 1995 Southeast Asian Games Singapore finished third and at that tournament they were fourth in 1997. The team’s first success at the ASEAN Football Championship was in 1998, when they won the tournament at the expense of Vietnam 1-0. The following title at the AFF Suzuki Cup (ASEAN Football Championship) came in 2002, and then they won it in 2004, 2007 and 2012.
