In East and central Africa Sudan is represented by the Sudan national team. It is controlled by the Sudan Football Association which was founded in 1936.
The biggest achievements of the team are connected with the Africa Cup of Nations. Sudan was one of three countries, besides Egypt and Ethiopia, to participate in Africa Cup of Nations opening matches in 1957 beating it’s way ‘per aspera ad astra’ gradually since then. Thus, in 1957 the Sudanese finished third in the African championship, they were runners-up in 1959 and 1963, and finally won the trophy in 1970. In 2012, Sudan was the only East African football team to reach the Africa Cup of Nations quarter final.
The Sudan national team is ranked 103d in FIFA table. Its highest position in FIFA list is 74th dating back to December 1996.
It’s noteworthy that Haitham Mustafa is the captain and the key player of the team. Thanks to his outstanding performances Mustafa is established as the team’s legend and a stalwart of Sudanese football. The veteran of Al-Hilal, where he plays since 1995, he graced the club with his 57 goals in 578 appearances.
