The Suriname national team represents Suriname on the international football scene. It is overseen by the Surinaamse Voetbal Bond founded as early as 1920. Suriname has a long FIFA membership as it affiliated to the international federation in 1929. It gained ascension into CONCACAF in 1965.
As a long-standing member of FIFA, Suriname took part in almost all the editions of the tournament since 1938. But it was too weak and mediocre team to ever qualify for the finals. It hasn’t qualified for the Gold Cup either. However, the team met with success in CFU Championship bearing the palm in 1977 and becoming a runner-up in 1979.
The former Dutch colony, Suriname produced myriad of skillful football players such as Aron Winter, Clarence Seedorf, Edgar Davids, Royston Drenthe, Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard and many others.
The ream is currently ranked 138th in the FIFA World table (as of September 2012), climbing up to the 84th at the utmost.
