The Syria national team represents the country in international football competitions. It is overseen by the Syrian Football Association founded in 1936. The team became a full FIFA member in 1937 and joined AFC in 1969.
The team got a first taste of international action playing their debut game against Turkey in November 1949, though they lost 0-7 then.
A team of average abilities, Syria has never passed through the FIFA World Cup qualification. But there is a tidbit that it was one of the first teams in Asia to take part in the 1950 and 1958 qualifiers. Their best showing in the tournament was in the 1986 edition when Syria broke into the final qualifying round only to go down to Iraq. The Syrian team had five appearances in the AFC Asian Cup but has never advanced further than Round 1.
The squad celebrated their biggest ever 13-0 win over Muscat and Oman in 1965, and suffered their greatest 0-8 losses to Greece and Egypt.
As of September 2012, Syria was ranked 148th in the FIFA world table reaching their highest position of 78th.
