The Tanzania national team represents this East African country at the international level. The team is overseen by the Tanzania Football Federation which was founded in 1930 and affiliated to CAF and FIFA only in 1964 after Tanzania gained its independence from the United Kingdom.
The Tanzania national squad played it first international match against Uganda as the Tanganyika national team in 1945. It was defeated 0-7 then. The team celebrated their biggest ever 7-0 win over Somalia in December 1995 and was grieved by the biggest 0-9 thrash to Kenya in 1956. The most recent breakthrough was a hard-fought 2-1 friendly victory over Oceania giants New Zealand.
The team doesn’t shape well in the international competitions. It has never reached the FIFA World Cup finals or passed through the Africa Cup of Nations qualification. However, the team was thrice a champion of the CECAFA Cup (in 1974, 1994 and 2010).
The team is often called the Taifa Stars on the African continent. It is currently ranked 132d in the FIFA top list.
