The Thailand national football team represents the country on the international scene. It is overseen by the Football Association of Thailand which was founded as early as 1916. Thailand became a member of FIFA in 1925 and joined the Asian Football Confederation in 1957.
Though the War Elephants have never got a taste of FIFA World Cup finals, they met much success in Asian football. Thus, the team cut a brilliant figure in the Asian Games climbing up to the 4th place in 1998; it was a tough nut to crack during the ASEAN Football Championships where Thailand passed flying colours thrice (in 1996, 2000 and 2002) and was a runner-up in 2007 and 2008. But the War Elephants met their major success in the Southeast Asian Games as they bore the palm 9 times.
Among the veterans of the Thailand national team is Totchtawan Sripan who has more appearances for the squad than any other player, amassing 145 of them. And Piyapong Pue-on proved to be the top scorer of Thailand netting overall 103 goals in 129 games for his team.
As of September 2012, Thailand has the 131st FIFA World rank, reaching 43d in 1998 at the utmost.
