History and achievements
The Trinidad and Tobago national football team is arguably the most powerful team in Caribbean region. The team, nicknamed The Soca Warriors, represented the smallest ever participating country in the World Cup Championship in 2006.
A tiny island state qualified for the FIFA World Cup Finals in Germany in 2006 where the team scored draw in the game with Sweden and lost to such strong opponents as Paraguay and England 0-2. At that time Leo Beenhakker guided the squad and such veterans as Dwight Yorke and Russell Latapy played for the team.
Dwight Yorke, who had a nickname The Smiling Assassin in English Premier League, is symbol of football in Trinidad and Tobago. He played for Aston Villa, Manchester United, later he played for Blackburn, Sunderland and Birmingham. Together with Andy Cole they were a very strong pair of forwards in Manchester team.
Among other famous footballers in Trinidad and Tobago are Stern John, the team’s best scorer (69), Shaka Hislop, who played for West Ham United, Portsmouth and Newcastle United. Kenwyne Jones played for Stoke City, Sunderland and Southampton. Chris Birchall was a player of Los Angeles Galaxy as well as David Backham.
Today the Trinidad and Tobago national football team is ranked 80th in the FIFA World Rankings.
