The Vietnam national team represents Vietnam in international football competitions. It is governed by the Vietnam Football Federation founded in 1962. The team affiliated to FIFA and AFC in 1964 and joined ASEAN Football Federation in 1996.
Though the team has never qualified for the World Cup finals, it is counted for a good deal in Asia. It had only one but decent appearance in the AFC Asian Cup finishing fourth in 2007. The Vietnamese men gained competitive results in the ASEAN Football Championship becoming the title winners in 2008. Moreover, the squad is one of the strongest sides in South East Asia. It became a runner-up seven times in the South East Asian Games and won the trophy in 1959.
The team’s most capped player is Nguyen Minh Phuong who shone for the squad in 73 matches. Lê Công Vinh graced Vietnam with his scoring 31 goals in 52 caps to the team.
The Vietnam national team is currently ranked 146th in the FIFA table (September 2012) reaching the 84th position at the utmost.
