History and achievements
The Wales national football team is governed by the Football Association of Wales. 1958 World Cup was the first and the only one, since that the team hasn’t managed to qualify for the major international tournament.
As of July 2012 the team is ranked 38th in the FIFA World Rankings.
In the 1958 World Cup Wales was drawn in one group with Sweden, Mexico and Hungary. The team shared the second spot with Hungary and had to replay the clash. The game ended in a 2-1 win and Wales saw through the round of 8 to be beaten by Brazil 0-1. It was Pele who scored that goal.
Wales has never played in European championship finals.
Home games are held at Millennium Stadium, before construction of that stadium the squad performed at Cardiff City Stadium and Liberty Stadium, Swansea.
Gary Speed, Ian Rush, Ryan Giggs, Mark Hughes, John Charles, Billy Meredith, Gareth Bale, Craig Bellamy are among the most notable players of the Wales national football team.
