The Yemen national team represents this Western Asian country on the international level. It is overseen by the Yemen Football Association which was founded in 1962. The same year, Yemen became the AFC member, and in 1980 it affiliated to FIFA.
The Yemen national team is considered to be the successor of the North Yemen national team as before unification in 1990 the country was split into North Yemen and South Yemen and two national teams existed. North Yemen played its first official match against Sudan in 1965.
The team has never qualified either for the FIFA World Cup or for the AFC Asian Cup. They celebrated their biggest ever 11-2 win over Bhutan in February 2000. The squad suffered their biggest 1-16 defeat to Libya in August 1965.
Yemen had the 157th position in the FIFA world ranking in November 2012. It was ranked 90th at the utmost in 1993.
