Barcelona target Vermaelen

Barcelona target Vermaelen

Daily Mirror informs Barcelona are hot on the trail of Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen, whom they are considering as a long-term replacement for Eric Abidal.

The 33-year-old Abidal has been taken to hospital over unresolved health problems that had emerged following a liver transplant. Barca’s coaching staff is unsure whether Abidal could feature in the first team in the near future. That is why the scouts are looking for the quality players who could bolster the defensive line and 27-year-old Belgium international Vermaelen is considered as an ideal candidate to fill Abidal’s boots.

This means that Wenger could lose yet another important player this summer, after parting ways with Cesc Fabregas and Alex Song last year. David Villa could be included as part of the deal to convince Wenger to sell Arsenal’s skipper.
