Bayern Munich lift DFB-Pokal trophy
Bayern Munich beat Stuttgart 3-2 in DFB-Pokal final to complete historic treble, after claiming Champions League trophy and Bundesliga title the month earlier.
Thomas Muller opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 37th minute of the game. Mario Gomez doubled Bayern’s lead with a closed-range finish from Lahm’s cross ten minutes later. Gomez then added his second from Muller’s delivery in the 61st minute to put the game beyond the doubt. Stuttgart refused to surrender and clawed two goals back courtesy of a brace from Harnik. The Austrian netted his first goal with a close-range header in the 71st minute and and scored the second goal with ten minutes to go.
The famous victory means Bayern Munichh have become the seventh side in history, and first ever German side, to complete treble.
The Bavarians’ coach Jupp Heynckes, who leaves the club next month to be replaced by Pep Guardiola, thanked his side for giving him “the most beautiful present” in his final game in charge. He said: “This is an emotional moment. The team have given themselves and me the most beautiful present around. The treble is unique - nobody has ever done it before in the history of the Bundesliga.”
