Benfica signed Markovic from Partizan Belgrade

Benfica confirmed the signing of highly-rated winger Lazar Markovic from Partizan Belgrade.

The news comes as a big blow for Chelsea, who have been strongly linked with a move for the starlet for about half a year. The recent reports have even suggested Chelsea to have snapped up the player and loaned him to Benfica for two seasons.

However the Portuguese club claims they have secured the services of the player on a permanent basis and Chelsea have no relation to the transfer at all. The 19-year-old Serbian is reported to have agreed a five-year deal with Benfica.

A statement on an official Benfica web-site read: “Serbian winger Markovic signed with Benfica for five seasons.”

Markovic admitted he is happy to have signed contract with such a well-supported club, and that Benfica’s style of football appeals to him. He said: “Benfica play very attacking football that fits nicely with my characteristics. I come from a winning team and this style of play, always looking for goals and victories, fits me. I know we will play in the Champions League so I am very motivated.”
