Carroll withdrawn from England squad due to injury

Liverpool striker Andy Carroll has been withdrawn from England squad by manager Roy Hodgson, after he suffered a foot injury during the training session.

The Football Association confirmed the towering striker, who is on course to joining West Ham on a permanent basis, has been ruled out of two friendly games against Republic of Ireland and Brazil. No replacement has been called up by England manager.

FA statement read: “Andy Carroll has been ruled out of the England squad for the upcoming internationals with Republic of Ireland and Brazil,” an FA statement read.

“Carroll had been named in Roy Hodgson’s squad that will take on Ireland at Wembley on Wednesday, May 29, and then travel to Rio to face Brazil on June 2, but has now been forced to withdraw through injury.

“No replacement will be made at this time.”

The news came as a blow for Hodgson, who publicly praised Carroll for his excellent run of form, while on loan at West Ham.
